Devonport Aquatic Centre

What the Tasmanian Liberals will do:

Provide $4 million towards the redevelopment of the Devonport Aquatic Centre.

We will provide $4 million over three years to support the construction of an 8 lane 25 metre indoor pool and associated complementary amenities (infant pool; hydrotherapy pool and stream room, fitness gymnasium and kiosk and retail outlets) at the existing Devonport Aquatic Centre.

Why this policy is needed
Construction of an indoor pool and associated amenities will provide both immediate and longer-term benefits to the local Devonport/Cradle Coast community. It will represent a much needed community development in an area of socio-economic disadvantage.

The construction stage would generate local employment opportunities and provide direct economic benefits. In addition, flow on jobs in the retail and fitness and health sector would also be created.

This project will provide significant and direct economic benefits for the local construction industry and continuing local jobs in the fitness and health and wellbeing sectors.

It will benefit people of every age and especially enhance facilities for those with disabilities or who need hydrotherapy.

The Devonport City Council has rated redevelopment of the aquatic centre as a major priority.

A Hodgman Liberal Government will provide $4 million as a contribution to this $12 million project.

Once completed the facilities would provide much needed social, health and wellbeing and recreational opportunities for many (including preschool and school age children, youth, families, older adults, clubs and a diverse range of sporting groups) all year round.

The number of indoor aquatic facilities on the North West coast is extremely limited and the present Devonport Olympic pool is currently the most used facility in the region. The proposal has been a regional priority for many years and has strong support from all stakeholders.

After more than 11 years of Labor...
The State Labor Government has continually overlooked North West regional needs, particularly key community infrastructure support.
