Parole Board

What the Tasmanian Liberals will do:

Reform the Parole Board to ensure there is a victims of crime representative on the Parole Board.

The Tasmanian Liberals have consistently called on the Government to adopt our policy of having a designated Victims of Crime representative sitting on the Parole Board of Tasmania.

There have long been community concerns that the rights of the prisoner have held more sway over the rights of the victims and their families.

While all other States and Territories have taken action to improve community confidence in the process and to ensure their Parole Boards have appropriate representation from victims of crime and community representatives, the Labor Government has consistently refused repeated Tasmanian Liberal calls to do the same.

The Corrections Act specifies that of the three persons appointed by the Governor to the Parole Board, one must be an experienced legal practitioner, while the two others should have experience in matters associated with medicine, penology, criminology or other matters deemed appropriate.

We have prepared the necessary legislative amendments to ensure that a designated Victims of Crime representative will be added to the Parole Board of Tasmania.
