Sentencing Advisory Council

What the Tasmanian Liberals will do:

Establish a Sentencing Advisory Council to bridge the gap between the judiciary, the courts and the government to better inform, better educate and better advise on sentencing matters.

There is a considerable degree of community disquiet about the perceived leniency of some sentences that have been handed down in some horrific rape cases, and the fact that once in jail, many of these offenders do not receive the sort of rehabilitation and treatment that they clearly need.

The establishment of a Sentencing Advisory Council, as recommended by the Law Reform Commission, which would comprise legal experts and appropriate representation from victims of crime groups, will bridge the gap between the judiciary, the courts and the government to better inform, better educate and better advise on sentencing matters.
